Frequently described as Scotland's premier course, Muirfield has always provided a true test of golf from which genuine champions invariably emerge: Cotton, Player, Nicklaus, Trevino, Watson, Faldo - legends of the game. Will David Duval successfully defend the title he won at Royal Lytham and St Annes or will Tiger Woods reclaim the old claret jug? Does Ian Woosman have another major title in his locker, or will the tournament produce a new name - Darren Clark or Padraig Harrington from Ireland, Sergio Garcia from Spain, or perhaps England's Justin Rose? And what of the young lions from America such as David Toms and Charles Howell III?

Muirfield has always been a test of consistency. With no weak holes on the course and severe punishment for errors everywhere it is essential to ensure there are no lapses in either course management or shot execution. Faldo put together eighteen consecutive pars in his final round to win in 1992. Quite possibly, the same would ensure victory for a third round leader this time, too.
